Greetings, UCASD Families:
We are excited to announce an upcoming event in our UCASD school community–one that will focus on the intersection of youth, social media, and mental health. If you are a parent, guardian, family member, or caregiver, or even an educator, counselor, or adult working with children and youth of all ages, please consider joining us for an evening with Mr. Ryan Klingensmith of Shape the Sky as he presents, “A Digital World: Youth, Technology, Social Media, and Mental Health.”
This free event will take place on the evening of Thursday, May 19, 2022 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Middle/High School Auditorium. Klingensmith, a licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), and founder of Shape the Sky, developed this presentation for adults as a way to inform families about not only “youth culture” online and the latest social media trends, but also the impact of social media on children’s mental health and well-being. He will be covering a variety of topics that are intended to support parents, guardians, and adults as they help the children in their lives navigate the world of electronic devices and social media. Some of these topics and concepts may include but are not limited to:
• TikTok, Snapchat & Instagram
• Cyberbullying resources
• Common mistakes made by youth
• Mental health concerns on popular social media apps
• Prevention steps and monitoring services
• Sexualized content and drug content on popular apps
• Using a “Technology Contract” and setting expectations for use
His hope and his organization’s mission is to “help parents and professionals create responsible children online. We believe that ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ when it comes to educating our youth around responsible technology use. If we don’t start the conversation now, our youth could make mistakes on social media in the future.”
